MR140710: Australian and Philippine universities forge partnership on education activities

Australian and Philippine universities forge partnership on education activities
10 July 2014

Australian and Philippine universities have forged an innovative partnership that will help promote joint scholarly activities, encourage student exchange opportunities, conduct cultural projects and study tours, and provide international study opportunities for outstanding Filipino undergraduate and graduate students.

Curtin University (Australia) and University of Santo Tomas (Philippines) today signed a Memorandum of Understanding to develop academic cooperation, including potential collaboration in the area of mining and metallurgical engineering.

Through this partnership, future Australia Awards Scholarship awardees will have the opportunity to finish a jointly-managed post-graduate degree program at Curtin University and the University of Santo Tomas.

Australian Ambassador to the Philippines Bill Tweddell said, “Education is a critical component of human development and is the flagship program of the Australian aid program in the Philippines”. He further said that “enhancing the Philippines’ human resource base in the minerals industry is critical if the Philippines’ vast mineral deposits are to be mined responsibly”.

For over 50 years, Australia has been providing scholarships to deserving Filipinos to enable them to contribute to Philippine development.

Applications for Australia Awards Scholarships 2015 intake are open until 31 August 2014. Visit www.australiaawardsphilippines.org for more details.
