21 February 2013
World-class academic standards, exposure to multi-cultural environments, leadership opportunities, and, best of all, the opportunity to contribute to the Philippines’ development – these are some of the things that future leaders from the Philippines can look forward to from Australia Awards Scholarships.
Australian Ambassador to the Philippines Bill Tweddell announced that applications for the 2014 Australia Awards Scholarships are open until 30 April 2013. At least 120 scholarships for Master’s and PhD studies in Australia’s top universities are available for high-achieving Filipinos.
The prestigious scholarship aims to enhance leadership and build people-to-people links between Australia and its partner developing countries including the Philippines.
“The Philippines is one of the largest recipients of the Australia Awards Scholarships program globally. The Australian Government recognises that improving the human capital of the Philippines can drive economic and social development. Through Australia Awards Scholarships, talented Filipinos have the opportunity to gain new knowledge, leadership and technical skills to spearhead development programs in the Philippines,” Ambassador Tweddell said.
In the Philippines, the Australia Awards Scholarships are part of the Australia-Philippines development cooperation program. Key areas of study include basic education, social protection/welfare, peace and development, public financial management, disaster risk reduction and management, climate change adaptation, organisational development, trade, and foreign relations. The Australia Awards Scholarships are offered to candidates with potential to assume leadership roles in their respective fields of expertise.
“Australia Awards Scholarships are highly competitive and are awarded to the best and brightest Filipinos who demonstrate not only academic excellence, but also the strongest potential for driving development in the Philippines,” added Ambassador Tweddell. “Awardees will experience and benefit from world-class and high-quality education. Australian universities are consistently ranked among the top educational institutions in the world, offering a complete range of programs and courses that lead to highly regarded and internationally-recognised qualifications. Australia is home to some of the world’s top universities, including 8 of the top 100 universities in the world.”
In 2012, a total of 111 Filipinos across the government, non-government, and private sectors, were awarded the Australia Awards Scholarships. These Filipino awardees left for Australia in January 2013 and are now experiencing the benefits of the scholarship, which covers awardees’ travel, study and living expenses in Australia.
