The entropy shuffle and other compositions drawn from the Vibrafon
Australian artist Tony Twigg is in Manila to present a new body of work at Galleria Duemila, which marks a decade spent exhibiting at this pre-eminent local gallery. Twiggs' latest foray into metal and canvas is derived from one of his familiar timber constructions. It is an energized shift that brings the seemingly accidental pulse of musical "jamming" to his abstractions.
Titled, The entropy shuffle and other compositions drawn from the Vibrafon, these new works play with the ‘musicality of abstraction’ by tracing changing arrangements of his wall sculpture onto canvas. Like a musician jamming Twigg re-arranges his individual units into various compositions that have been "recorded" or traced in paint on canvas. As flat paintings his compositions vibrate with discord and harmony between order and disorder on a journey that ends in randomness and happenstance.
“Entropy,” Twigg explains, “is the natural progression from an ordered state to a state of disorder. But in these paintings a visual paradox is at work. A circle is fractured as it progresses from stasis in it's a complete form to a highly energized, finely tuned composition of fractured elements.” He continued, “Essentially, it is a discussion of different states of energy…a sort of slow motion explosion not unlike the Philippines itself“.
From sculpture to painting, and eventually interrupted as a 3 dimensional composition in steel, this is both a playful and deeply considered suite of art works. The entropy shuffle and other compositions drawn from the Vibrafon is on exhibit with Gallery Duemila from October 9 to November 2, 2010. Galleria Duemila is located at 210 Loring St., Pasay City.
