AUSTRALIAN SUPPORT TO INDIGENOUS PEOPLE'S SCHOOL CHILDREN

In a recent visit to the Institute for Indigenous Peoples Education (IIPE) Centre in Davao City, Australian Ambassador to the Philippines Rod Smith (seated, right) engaged in a storytelling session with the indigenous peoples’ children from the Bagobo and Matigsalog tribes.

The IIPE Centre was established by the Philippines-Australia Basic Education Assistance for Mindanao (BEAM) project in partnership with the Department of Education (DepEd) and other government and NGO partners to serve as the hub for IP education.

Through the IIPE, BEAM and its partners developed and started implementing an indigenised curriculum and instructional materials which mainstream the teaching of indigenous values while adhering to the Basic Education Curriculum learning competencies for Elementary and High School.

BEAM is a Php1.5 billion (A$39.2 million) initiative of the Australian Government through the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) and implemented in partnership with DepEd.
